Purification of Water In An Emergency

Disaster Water Supply?

Every year, numerous disasters occur all around the world. Disasters, whether natural or manmade, can be quite tricky to predict even with the most sophisticated technology in our hands. Thus, the only way to mitigate the effects of such a disaster is by adequate preparation. As disasters can strike at any time and any place, it is to always a good idea to have an emergency kit in your home or office so as to ensure that you are prepared.

One of the most essential supplies that should be included in any emergency kit is an adequate disaster water supply. Often, after a disaster, you may have to survive on your own for hours or days before emergency services arrive to your aid. While emergency supplies such as food and medical items may be of vital use, having a supply of water is essential to one’s survival. When planning and stocking your emergency supply kit, you should therefore, include an adequate disaster water supply.

Often, questions are raised as to how much water would be required for a person to survive for an extended period. While the body is pretty hardy and can survive without other essentials such as food for a number of weeks, it requires at least two quarats of water a day for the organs to function properly.

Thus, when stocking your disaster water supply in your emergency kit, be sure to take this into account. Moreover, be sure to calculate the total amount of water you will require if the disaster kit needs to also supply for other individuals, i.e. if you have a family.

When stocking one’s disaster water supply, you should also stock some form of emergency purification so as to ensure that your drinking water is safe. Purification methods available include filtration, chemical treatment and boiling. In disaster cases, filtration and chemical treatment may be more applicable.

There are a number of portable filters available on the market. Moreover, the filters are of different sizes so you can find one to fit any emergency kit you are preparing. As modern water filters are made from the latest technology, one can be assured that they are durable. Thus, though the initial investment for a higher-end filter may be more a little more expensive, the filters last for a very long time without any need for replacement.

Aside from their durability, portable filters are the best purification devices to use in assuring your disaster water supply due to the addition of chemical treatment to the filters. This treatment ensures that any microorganisms within the water are properly disposed off.

Chemical treatment by itself may not be completely effective in ensuring that one’s disaster water supply is safe. However, when combined with filtration, the two methods are highly effective for seeing you have a water supply available at all times.

Another thing you can do is to keep a large amount of water on hand in storage. However, it needs to be replaced periodically and will take up a lot of space if you have a large family and store enough for even a weeks survival. However, in case of an extented emergency it wouldn't hurt to have both options available for a continued disaster water supply.
