In fact, they take it for granted that they will have safe, clean drinking water at their disposal all the time. That is until an emergency occurs.

During an emergency, such as an earthquake, hurricane, flood or other natural disaster or after a terrorist attack, it is quite possible to lack potable water. It is therefore worth anyone’s while to know how to purify water for drinking.

There are many different methods for water purification but the specific way of how to purify water for drinking will depend on the type of contaminants in the water. There are 2 types of water contaminants; biological and non-biological contaminants. Biological contaminants include protozoa, viruses and bacteria. Non-biological contaminants include oils, chemicals and other poisonous substances.

It is also the safest water purification method. All you need to do is to bring water to boil in a clean container, and once it has boiled, keep it boiling for at least a minute. This method of purification works for most biological contaminants. However, boiling may not be an available option as it requires energy like electricity or fire. In some emergency situations, electricity gets cut off and something to start a fire may not be available.

The next best method of water purification is disinfection. Iodine or chlorine are the two compounds used for disinfection. Iodine or chlorine tablets or solutions can be purchased from most sporting good stores or pharmacies. If you do not have any of the two, ordinary household bleach will suit nicely as a water disinfectant. The household bleach however should not be scented, contain any dye or additive. It should also be made up of about 6% chlorine to work best.

Once you have applied the chlorine to the water, you should let it stand for about half an hour before drinking. If the water does not have a slight chlorine smell, you should add more chlorine to it. A drawback to this method of purification is that it gives the water a chlorine taste. However, that is better than drinking contaminated water.

Children who are old enough should also be taught how to purify water for drinking as this is a very important survival skill. It will not only stand them in good stead during a disaster but it will also be of help during a camping trip.
