Polluted Drinking Water
If you were in a disaster situation would you know what to do? What if the only thing available liquid was polluted drinking water? Would you know how to purify it? Would you know how to find more?
Most individuals never really think about just how important water is to our survival. People have been known to live up to a month without food, but after a few days without safe drinking water you have a very life threatening situation.
Many people when given no other choice have been known to drink polluted drinking water. Doing this is very likely to only make matters much worse. If you get sick from bacteria or unportable chemicals in the water the dehydration from the vomiting and diarrhea is only going to create medical conditions that is almost impossible to deal with without purified water and medication.
If you find yourself in a situation where the only water available is suspect, you need to have the knowledge to know how to purify it. There are a number of ways to do this but one of the surest is through boiling. If you do not have at least a few survival skills even this can be a problem if there is no gas or electricity available. One of the easiest things you can do is store a quantity of matches in a water tight container and store them in a place where you can get to them if needed. In this day and age few people have the skills to start a fire without a little help. This presents the simplest and surest way to be certain you have a way for boiling water or cooking.
You can also make polluted drinking water a lot safer by the use of a few drops of unscented bleach. This kills most of the harmful bacteria and is very simple to do. Just add around 15 to 20 drops of bleach to a gallon of water, stir and wait around twenty to thirty minutes. You should be able to smell the bleach in the water. If you can not smell it repeat the process until you can.
There are also a number of items you can buy at most sporting goods stores or over the internet to keep you from having to drink polluted drinking water. This can include things as simple and inexpensive as iodine tablets, or the more expensive but more thorough commercial water filters.
Of course the best way to survive a disaster or emergency situation is to be prepared for it. There are other things you can do to further insure the safety of yourself and your family which you may want to look into. Having a few weeks supply of safe drinking water stored somewhere around the house would eliminate the need for most of the above if the emergency didn't outlast your water supply.
