Purification of Water In An Emergency

River Water Purification Facts

River water purification is essential because in the current world, river water has been polluted by industrial waste. This has made it unsafe for human consumption and in many cases even animals are at risk. Without river water purification, the river waters can bring about diseases such as tapeworms, amoeba, typhoid and even poisoning that can result in death. The following are the steps for carrying out river water purification.

Carry water from the river using clean containers: When fetching River water, ensure that you use containers that are not in anyway contaminated. To achieve this, wash the containers using liquid chlorine. Pour a teaspoon of this chorine in a liter of water and use the water to wash the containers. This ensures that germs and contamination in the container are done away with.

Filtering the River water: In the river water purification process, you should filter the water using either a clean piece of cloth (If it contained silt). It is best to use a cotton cloth as it has small pores that discourage impurities from going through. Filtering the river water can also be done through the use of a small portion of aluminum sulfate. The Aluminum sulfate ensures that impurities settle at the bottom of the container and these impurities can then be disposed of. If one is available it is advisable to use a commercial water filter during the filtering process.

Water Purification: After filtering the river water, you can then carry out the river water purification using the following means:

a)Disinfecting the river water: There are various ways in which river water can be disinfected. The most common means is by the use of house hold bleaching with chlorine. When using chlorine in river water purification, you should add two drops of chlorine per every liter of river water. Wait for half an hour before considering the disinfected river water safe for consumption.

b)Boiling the distilled river water: This is the most accepted means of river water purification. This is because it kills most of the germs with almost a hundred percent certainty. In carrying out this method, ensure that the water boils for at least 10 minutes. Remove the boiled river water from the fire and leave it to cool before consumption.

c)Using Natural water purification means: The most common natural means used in river water purification is a method known as Solar Water Disinfection or better known as SODIS. This method, as the name suggests, is the use of the sunrays to purify river water. For an individual to attain this form of river water purification, you should pour the river water into a disinfected transparent plastic bottle and then expose the bottle to sunlight for between six to eight hours after which, the river water is considered safe for human consumption. SODIS has been considered over the years as an effective method of river water purification even though it requires patience due to the long duration of time it takes. If possible filter the water before the process.

After carrying out the various methods of river water purification, it is good that an individual be careful in how they handle the purified river water lest it is infected once again. Individuals handling purified water must be certain they maintain a high standard of cleanliness and that they don’t touch the container of purified river water with dirty hands.
