Purification of Water In An Emergency

If you are reading this article you must have an interest in ways to purify water. With the world's water supply getting smaller everyday and more and more disasters happening which in many cases cut off water supplies, you are making a very wise decision coming to our site.

Many of us living in water rich countries don't realize or don't like to think about the millions of people around the world dying because of a lack of safe water for drinking and producing sanitary living conditions.

Of the over six billion people in the world, 1 billion of them live in areas that have borderline or very serious water problems. Many of these are arid areas which receive very little rain fall. Others have wells and rivers that are getting seriously polluted.

Most people think because ¾ of the earth is covered with water we could never run out. However what a lot of people do not realize is out of all the water in the world only 2 % of it is safe to drink, and that number is falling. The rest of the water is in glaciers or contains chemicals and salt that make it unable to use as drinking water.

Below are a number of ways to purify water. You can look over them and consider which methods are best in a situation you feel could most easily happen in the area where you live or are traveling.

Boiling Water – Boiling water is the easiest ways to purify water in an emergency situation. It will kill most of the dangerous bacteria that could be dwelling in the water. However, boiling will not take out any harmful chemicals in the water. You should at least run it thorough some sort of filtering system first to make it even safer.

Water Filters - Even before boiling water it is best to make some sort of filter system to pour the water through, even if it is only clean pieces of clothing to take out some of the larger particles. We have an article called “emergency water filter” on our site you may want to read. However, even though our site has a number of ways to filter water in an emergency situation, if possible buy a few professional water filters and keep them on hand for an emergency. They are easy to use and will give you faster and better results.

Using Chemicals – One of the ways to purify water is through the use of chemicals. If you want to really prepare for an emergency there are chemical packs you can purchase especially for this purpose. However, if you have found yourself unprepared you can even use some household chemicals such as unscented bleach. After filtering and boiling the water as best you can you only need to add around 4 drops of bleach to each gallon of water and let it sit for 15 minutes. If after this time is has no bleach smell you need to repeat the process until it has at least a very slight bleach smell to it.

After using any or all of the above ways to purify water you may want to pour it from one clean container to another for a few times. This does not help purify it but it will add air and oxygen to the water and give it a better taste.

The very best way to prevent from having to use the above ways to purify water is to be prepared. Keep a stored supply of water that would allow everyone in the household to have one gallon of water daily. This would give each person enough to drink as well as have a little extra for cooking and hygiene.

The best advice I can give is first, be prepared with a stored water supply that would last the family for at least a week or 10 days in an emergency, and second to buy a few emergency water filters and purification tablets and keep on hand. That way you can use your energies for other things that a disaster situation could bring with it. However, safe drinking water and the knowledge of how to obtain it should be at the top of your list. The human body can live for weeks without food, but without safe drinking water it can only survive for a matter of days.

There are other ways to purify water listed on our site other than the ones mentioned above. However, these are the simplest to use.
